Outer Space: 51st session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the COPUOS (February, 2014)

The 51st session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) takes place from the 10th to the 21st of February 2014 in Vienna.

During this two week session, the 76 Member States, observers as the European Union or the European Spatial Agency, scientists and experts will discuss an agenda prepared by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (OOSA).

The growing number of users, and thus of objects in the outer space, increases risks of space debris and collisions.

The long-term sustainability of outer space activities is currently a matter of particular importance, where France is deeply involved. The guidelines prepared by the Working Group on the Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space will then be an important point discussed by the Subcommittee.

The participants will also examine the use of space technology and its applications in support of sustainable development goals, in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals.
